For more than 70 years, the name J.F. Day Company has been synonymous with excellent window and door products and service. J.F. Day Company is the Southeast’s largest distributor for Pella windows and doors. Though the product line has changed and expanded over the years, the commitment to quality has remained the same, and so has the name above the door. Current president J.F. “Frank” Day, III joined the company in 1970 and represents the third generation of leadership for the Birmingham-based firm, which was founded by his father and grandfather.
The company history goes back to 1936, the year J.F. Day, Jr. finished The Coast Guard Academy and joined his father, J.F. Day, Sr., in starting the company. Specializing in Venetian blinds, screens, and weather stripping for residential and commercial structures, the enterprise handled primarily the blinds manufactured by Rolscreen Company of Pella, Iowa. In 1939, J. F. Day Company also began manufacturing its own blinds, but in the 1960s the firm expanded its product lines and relationship with Rolscreen Company and became a distributor for the full line of Pella products.
Although national manufacturers were dubious, in the 1960s the Days found a strong, viable market for insulated windows in the South, building a good foundation even before the energy-conscious 1970s. As sales increased, the company committed to carrying a full inventory of Rolscreen's Pella products in order to offer immediate delivery.
Since then the corporation has added Pella distributorships in Memphis, Tenn., Jackson, Miss., and the Gulf Coast region stretching from Apalachicola, Fla. to Lake Charles, La., and North to the boot of Missouri, with showrooms sales and service staffs in each of those areas. All fulfillment is done through Day’s modern distribution center in the West Oxmoor Industrial Park in Birmingham.
Day’s business is divided into three distinct segments to meet the specialized needs of the Residential Single Family New Home, Residential Replacement Window and Commercial Window markets.
“As we have attained critical mass in our three business segments we have achieved economies of scale and greater expertise in providing better service to our unique customer segments,” states Frank Day.
In 1997, the company welcomed “J.Frank” Day, IV—now vice president and CFO—making him the fourth generation of Days to guide the family business. The current father-and-son team, along with the rest of the Day organization, still adheres to the company’s longtime formula for success.
"First and foremost we have great customers,” Frank Day notes. “Then with the reputation, breadth and affordability of our high-quality Pella product line, our great people are dedicated to our goals of creating a very satisfactory customer experience, continuous improvement, teamwork, growth and profitability. That's been and continues to be our formula for success."
